Online Video Tools

Convert, compress, trim, merge, make GIFs and extract or replace audio in your browser, with your files kept on your device. Play HLS and DASH streams, or cast a video to your TV with the Cast Player, which uploads a temporary copy of each file you open.

Why browser-based tools

Four things to know before you pick a tool.

File tools keep your files on your device

The file tools work in your browser, and your files never leave your device. The Cast Player is the exception: as soon as you open a file, it uploads a temporary copy for your Chromecast, which is deleted within about 3 hours.

Built-in video encoders

The Video Compressor, the Video Trimmer (when you move the start) and the Video Converter (when a format needs it) re-encode video with your browser's WebCodecs encoder, which can use your device's video hardware.

File tools keep going if Wi-Fi drops

Each file tool downloads its engine the first time you use it, and the Audio Extractor downloads an extra encoder the first time you save as MP3 or FLAC (or AAC, in some browsers). After that, the tool keeps working on that page if your connection drops. The HLS & DASH Player and the Cast Player always need a network.

When to use which tool

Short playbook for picking the right tool for common video problems.

Need the file to play somewhere specific?

The Video Converter switches a video between MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV. When the new format can hold your file's streams as they are, they are copied with no quality loss; when it can't, as with H.264 going into WebM or a portrait phone video going into MKV, the converter re-encodes in your browser.

Developer or QA work with streams?

Paste an m3u8 or MPD link into the HLS & DASH Player to check that it plays, see its quality levels and switch between them. The stream's server must allow playback on other sites (CORS).

Need to shrink a video file?

The Video Compressor re-encodes a video to H.264 MP4 to make it smaller, one video at a time. Its Light, Medium and Heavy presets set a target bitrate, and the tool estimates files will be 30–85% smaller. Handy for email attachments, chat uploads and freeing up space.

Cutting down a long video?

The Video Trimmer cuts a video down to the part you want, starting exactly where you set it, and keeps its file type. Drag the start and end handles or type exact times, check the range in the preview, and download the clip. Works with MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV files up to 2 GB.

Pulling audio from a video?

The Audio Extractor saves the sound from a video as MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV or FLAC, for podcast episodes, ringtones or a lossless copy of the video's audio.

Swapping audio tracks?

Add Audio to Video replaces a video's soundtrack with an audio file you choose. Both streams are copied into an MP4 without re-encoding, which suits voice-overs, narration and music swaps.

Building something shareable?

The Video-to-GIF converter turns short clips into animated GIFs with Floyd-Steinberg dithering. That matters because GIFs are limited to 256 colors per frame, and without dithering, video frames look banded.

Casting to a TV?

The Cast Player plays a video from your device and casts it to a Chromecast. Opening a file uploads it to our temporary storage for the Chromecast; the playback link works for 2 hours and the file is deleted within about 3 hours.

Joining multiple clips into one?

The Video Merger joins video files end to end without re-encoding. Put the clips in order with the up and down buttons and download one MP4. The clips need the same codec and resolution, so clips from the same camera or app work best.

Where your files go

When you convert, compress, trim, merge, make a GIF, or extract or add audio, the tool reads your file in the browser, processes it on your device and saves the result straight from the browser. Your files never leave your device.

The Cast Player works differently. When you open a file, it is uploaded to our temporary storage so your Chromecast can play it, because a Chromecast needs a web address to load the video from. The playback link works for 2 hours and the file is deleted within about 3 hours. Playback on the page itself uses the file on your device.

The HLS & DASH Player loads the stream you paste straight from its server. When you are signed in, the tools also check your usage limit with our server; those requests send the tool's name, never your file.
